Gojo Furusato, Kyoto

Originally built in 1900, this classic “Machiya” (meaning townhouse) is on a quiet little alleyway, yet being just off Ainomachi street, is walking distance to Kyoto bullet train station, 2 blocks from the Gojo subway station, and close by to Higashi Honganji temple.

We wanted to give it a second chance to provide a quiet resting place for weary travellers once more.

Despite being unoccupied for many years, the house was fundamentally structurally sound.

A few supporting beams needed reinforcement, and we determined to replace central internal roof beams.

However, it was most definitely in need of interior renovation!

As new floors were needed, we took the opportunity to ensure we had more modern insulation, as well as installing in the walls prior to the redecoration.

We went with a classic Japanese design theme, augmented by minimalist modern features that would be in keeping with Japanese style.

A “toro” (stone lantern) in the garden and green tatami in the living room are respectful nods to Kyoto’s own heritage.

The exterior is finished with “yaki-ita” meaning “burned boards,” traditional black wood house panelling.

This development was managed by our good friends at Heritage Homes Japan.
